Less is More: Tips to Simplify Your Closet

Dress

I recently partnered with NESTEA for the launch of their new iced teas–which have been completely reformulated by using fewer ingredients and a simpler recipe. With the “less is more” approach to life, NESTEA also built a tiny house and I had the awesome opportunity to help curate the closet for simple living. Last week I was in New York city for the launch and reveal of the NESTEA Tiny House and it was so cool to see all our work come to life!

The Tiny House was parked for the day in Herald Square, so anyone could come by to tour the house and taste the new iced teas. We were so lucky with the weather as it was a beautiful, warm sunny day. In fact, maybe it was a little too warm but that made it an even more perfect day to have a delicious iced-cold tea 🙂 For the day of the launch I wore a beautiful green off the shoulder dress. I chose this dress because it was simple, classy, modern and feminine.

Once I had the chance to go inside the house, I was so surprised how cute it was! Even though the house is tiny, it felt so spacious inside. It has everything you could need—a kitchen, eating area, T.V and small living room/sitting area, bathroom with a shower, and a loft for the sleeping area. There is also a shelf for storage and a closet with the wardrobe I curated!

When designing for the NESTEA Tiny House I wanted my apparel and accessory selections to be both feminine and simple and – as with any well curated wardrobe – be easy to mix and match with just a few pieces (more on simplifying your closet below). Overall I kept to a neutral color scheme such as whites, nudes and pale pinks – I personally love wearing every color on the color wheel, but I’ve found that when I travel with a small amount of clothes, it’s so much faster to throw great outfits together when there is a color scheme! I also included a bold green as my accent color, to tie in to NESTEA’s signature color which can be seen throughout the house in both the food and the interior decorating. Adding touches of green creates such a natural, fresh and calming setting and is so perfect for the NESTEA Tiny House!

One of my favorite pieces I chose for the closet is a tan hat with a black stripe by Ale for Alessandra. It’s going to be so perfect for the warmer days and the coming years too. It will make any look more casual and western. A fun bag I chose in green will brighten any look and work wonderfully for spring as well. I tried to stick to lighter materials since the NESTEA Tiny House is being revealed in the spring – such as a the lovely crepe silk blazer in soft pink. The tops I chose were both white and would match the denim I chose (any clean pair of denim is timeless, really) easily.

After creating the wardrobe for the Tiny House I decided to work on simplifying my own closet. A cleaner, emptier space allows more creativity, freedom and a calmer environment. For most people (myself included), clutter causes a little bit of anxiety. At the same time, many of us have also become accustomed to it and our “things” have been piling up for years but we ignore it anyways. Let me just say, this is not a healthy habit!

The first step to simplify a closet would be to sort through every single item – clothes, shoes, bags, jewelry, and take out the ones you do not absolutely love. Or even non-apparel items (that shouldn’t be in your closet but they are) like yearbooks, old photo albums, old technology, souvenirs, etc – think carefully about each item. Does it really hold memories you hold dear? Or does it just hold memories? Can the items be recycled? Can someone else use it or enjoy it more than you? Simple living does not mean you have to have simple things, but rather that every item you own serves a purpose or brings you joy.

Focus on keeping classic pieces, clothing of similar color themes, and closet staples. And by closet staples, I am also meaning those “double-duty” items! Items like a LBD, jeans, jean and leather jacket, T-shirt, blouse, skirt/shorts, pair of heels, sandals and sneakers. These should be well-made pieces that both look good and are comfortable, and that you can easily take from day-to-night by adding a layer or switching out for another piece. Throw on an effortlessly cool motorcycle jacket over your T-shirt and jeans, and switch out those sandals for a pair of heels…and you are ready for a fun night out! Or, if you just got out of work and are heading to dinner, throw on a the motorcycle jacket over your LBD for an instantly chic look. You can even change into sandals and add a jean jacket if you plan to run errands and need a more casual look.

With less “stuff” filling up every corner of your closet, you will have an easier time putting together an outfit and you can spend less time focusing choosing what to wear and more time with your kids, spouse, dog, sleeping in….or whatever brings you more joy in life!
