I’ve Been Published in a Book! + How I Got into Fashion Blogging

Something I get asked fairly often is how I got into blogging so I thought I would share a post about it!

I was actually brought up in a household in which fashion and makeup were kind of shamed. My mom is a practical woman and she got a lot of character traits from her dad, who was a sergeant in the army. NEVERTHELESS I rebelled and started dressing up for high school and college. (I know, I was a pretty tame rebel) I just always got so excited to plan my outfits! In fact I had a blank page notebook in which I would draw my outfit for the next day, almost every day, and sometimes I would even plan a week of outfits in advance!

Some time in college I met a friend who was into photography. He paid me to do some fun fashion shoots for his portfolio. I also took a photojournalism class and my dad bought me a Nikon D60 DSLR! I got pretty comfortable with the camera and also ended up taking a community college photography class on Saturdays.

A year or two after college I was working at software company as a graphic designer and web editor. I was pretty dissatisfied with my life! This is around the time when I stumbled on a fashion sharing website called Chictopia.com. After browsing, and browsing, and browsing… I decided I wanted to do what those girls (and some guys!) were doing too!

So luckily I had a little sister at the time without a car or boyfriend and a LOT of time on her hands! She agreed to shoot my photos and she was available pretty much any time I needed her. That was important because I was still working at the software company. It was hard to figure out what kind of lighting to get, how I should stand, or what angle I looked best in. We kept trying though and my photos began to get more and more votes on Chictopia as we slowly figured things out.

As time went on, I felt limited on Chictopia – it’s good for posting a few photos with a short caption but I decided I would just use that platform to direct traffic to my blog. This worked well for me and after a few months (sometime in 2012) someone wrote an email to me and said I should start an Instagram. I am forever grateful to that person. I know I eventually would have made an Instagram but how much time would have passed? However, just making an Instagram alone was not enough… I was not posting the right photos!

Shortly after I started an Instagram, one of my followers on Instagram asked me to post my outfit photos from my blog. I seriously remember thinking that’s silly… they can just go to my blog to see my outfits! But that’s when it got crazy! Outfit photos began to go viral! And the rest is history 🙂

Now, as many of you probably know, for about a year now I’ve been using the @Liketoknow.it app to link all my outfit details on my Instagram. I’m so excited to say they’ve just created a beautiful coffee table book, with stories from over a hundred other influencers and they’ve dedicated two whole pages to me! Definitely check it out if you’re either looking for a fun read, want a pretty coffee table book, or both!

We had a few cooler days last week when we shot this so I definitely had to throw on a staple fall/winter look with a sweater and boots. I just found two additional slim fit boots for 13 inch calves (mine are 13 and these Marc Fisher ones are 13.5 and I still need to wear thick socks with them) and they’re arriving tomorrow so I’m really excited to see if they are as amazing in person as they looked online.

I hope you guys enjoyed this post! It was more lengthy than usual and I have to say it was fun to write! Let me know what you guys think!
XOXO
